When I was a kid in school, ignoring my class, I would do '3D pencil doodles' that I would test by crossing my eyes.

I didn't try to draw with my eyes crossed with my hand and pencil moving around to distract me. I was drawing using theory, learning and creating rules of 3D. (Bloody teacher would keep interrupting but I got it down anyway.)

(What's a little nine year old to do with big people like that?)

"Cross your eyes" is something people understand when they think about how it looks when kids do it and easy to explain to people that want to see your picture in 3D. If not, then you can get them to put on special glasses for some pictures.

The trouble is that people already KNOW how to see in 3D. All the time in fact! We look out a window, we look in a mirror, we reach for our beer. (We even dream in perfect 3D, Believe it or not~!)

3D is not about crossing your eyes unless you are looking at a bug or trying to see the tip of your nose.

It is about looking away like when you are on the street talking to your friend and a big BANG happens down the street and your eyes look AWAY from your friend.

I hate crossing my eyes in 3D now. It is unnatural when trying to 'LOCK-in' and hard to maintain. You can only see it for a few moments.

Once you understand 'side-by side, Parallel-View', It is a matter of moving away from the image at first, then relaxing your eyes a little bit like in a daze. Tilting your ears a bit to help line up the two sides together in a new center image (like crossing your eyes.) When you 'LOCK-in' ignoring the sides, you can move in closer or even zoom with a clear 3D image. When you examine yourself in the mirror, you are not seeing toothpaste stains on the glass. Don't get distracted by the sides or you will lose your lock.

Okay! Now this is important!!!

If you check out a free software download called "Stereophoto Maker" You can easily copy 3d works from the web or even my free stuff and use "Stereophoto Maker" to flip it either way. Cross-Eyes or Parallel by just using the x key.

This program is a tiny download but can do tons of great stuff in 3D. You can fix the side by side pictures for red green glasses too or make wiggle GIFS for animation

You can use any digital camera to create your own perfect 3D art with practice. Learn it gradually and find others that enjoy it. You can download it from Wikipedia!

Oh yah, I don't draw or paint with 3d glasses or with my eyes crossed but I do watch what I am making in 3d in real time by simply relaxing my eyes and looking around in my picture.

Oh by the way, speaking of school in the old days as a kid there was an art form called PopArt. There were some of these posters in class that created an amazing 'pop out' effect by just using select colors in the background and foreground of a single image. As an artist myself, I still have no idea how they did that then but I never did pay attention in class.
